Is a Ductless HVAC System Good to Have in Your Home?

August 25, 2020 | Blog

A ductless, mini-split HVAC system is a great substitute for a central HVAC system. It has a number of advantages, including not needing ductwork and being convenient to use. However, there are a few downsides to having a ductless HVAC system in your home. Let’s explore these advantages and disadvantages.

The Pros of Having a Ductless HVAC System

  • Flexibility. A ductless HVAC system directly delivers conditioned air to zones. It gives you multiple interior design options. You can hang the system on your wall, suspend it from the ceiling, or mount it flush into a dropped ceiling. You can install it in new construction and home additions — even in a building that’s currently using a forced-air system.
  • Improved air quality. Ducts tend to accumulate potentially harmful contaminants over time. Ductless, mini-split systems not only lack ductwork to collect pollutants but also have multi-stage filtration that can reduce airborne particulates drastically.
  • Easy installation. Installation of ducted systems can take several weeks, disrupting your normal activities. Ductless systems are much less invasive and easier to install.
  • Energy savings. Ductless systems are highly efficient because they don’t experience the energy loss associated with ducts.

The Cons of Having a Ductless HVAC System

  • It costs more upfront. Whether replacing a single room baseboard or window unit or your home’s existing central HVAC system, ductless systems cost more to buy and install out of pocket. However, they’ll save you much more energy in the long run.
  • It needs regular maintenance. You’ll have to wash the filters more than once a month if you’re a pet owner or a smoker. Neglecting to clean your ductless HVAC system will make it incapable of handling the accumulated debris and could decrease its life span.
  • It produces some noise. Modern ductless systems are significantly quieter than older models. However, with most models, you’ll hear a low whooshing sound.

Not all HVAC contractors are proficient at installing ductless systems. If you choose to purchase a ductless HVAC system, be sure to work with an experienced HVAC contractor that can size and install the system correctly. Great Company

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
