AC Maintenance: What You Can Do Yourself, And What You Should Hire A Trained Technician To Do

June 8, 2011 | Blog

To keep your air conditioner running smoothly all year round, certain maintenance steps need to be taken.  You can do some of these yourself while others will require a professional HVAC technician to take care of.  Following are some examples of both types of maintenance.

One of the easiest things you can do to maintain your A/C is to change the air filters out regularly.  This will help keep the air flowing freely and uninhibited by the accumulation of dust and other materials.  It is an easy thing to forget but can go a long way in keeping your air conditioner running efficiently.

You can also help keep your outdoor unit clean to ensure it is working properly.  A quick rinse with the water hose on the outdoor condenser coil can rinse off dirt and debris.  Don’t spray into the coil because you will drive the dirt deeper into the coil.  Rinse down with no pressure to allow the dirt and debris to flow out.  Make sure the outside unit can breathe and there are no obstructions to the airflow such as vines, shrubs, or fences.

An HVAC professional can inspect each component in your air conditioning and make sure they are up to par.  They can detect deterioration before it gets out of hand and replace worn parts.  This helps prevent the unexpected breakdown of your HVAC system when you are using it more frequently.

You need a technician to make sure your air conditioning is working as efficiently as possible, too.  They will lubricate moving parts and tighten electrical connections to make sure everything is chugging along just right.  They also check the refrigerant level to make sure you are getting all the efficiency out of your unit you can.  A unit that is just one pound low on refrigerant can cost you up to 20% extra on your cooling bills.
