Energy evaluations can help you save on your utility bills by identifying areas where you’re wasting energy. They will also provide you with a list of solutions you can implement to begin seeing savings immediately.
Energy evaluations involve an energy auditor looking at how much you’ve spent on energy for the past year to get an idea of your monthly usage. An inspection of both the outside and inside of your home will help give them ideas of where energy may be lost. If you are experiencing any heating or cooling problems, let them know when they arrive so they can focus on particular solutions.
They will also ask a number of questions to determine what kind of day-to-day activities you have. This information will help them determine how little energy you should really be using to stay comfortable in your home. Some questions may include:
- How many people live in your house?
- Are there extended periods of time the house is unoccupied?
- Which rooms are rarely occupied?
- What do you set the temperature at when you are home (and not at home)?
One common problem that is discovered through an energy evaluation is leaking ducts. Up to 20 percent of the air that is supposed to be distributed through the ductwork can leak out through holes, cracks or loose connections in the ductwork. Duct sealant, an inexpensive putty-like material, can be spread over such holes with a brush or a trowel. It hardens and then prevents air from escaping.
Other suggestions may be more labor-intensive but will provide greater long-term savings. For example, upgrading to Energy Star-approved equipment will cost more upfront but the savings will be substantial in cooling bills while providing you with greater comfort. The greater the investment, the more long-term rewards you will see.
