Even A Mild Winter Requires Some Form Of Heat -- Why Heat Pumps Provide A Viable Option

December 6, 2011 | Blog

On average, winters on Texas’ Gulf Coast are mild, especially in comparison with winters in northern climates. However, the mildness of temperature is relative; what may be considered comfortable in the north may be just a little too chilly in South Texas.

heat pump may be the simplest solution to your year-round heating and cooling needs in a Texas climate. In the summer, heat pumps are very effective at cooling your whole home. In the winter, they can be just as effective at providing heat as long as temperatures don’t fall below freezing. Heat pumps become much less efficient at these cooler temperatures, but since our winters seldom get that cold, heat pumps remain a viable choice for the area.

The U.S. Department of Energy reports that air-source heat pumps can produce up to three times as much heat energy as the electrical energy they use. This is because heat pumps do not burn combustible fuels to generate heat for your home. Instead, they move heat from one place to another, either bringing in heat in the winter or removing and dispersing excess heat in the summer.  This means that a heat pump will cost about 1/3 as much to heat your home compared to electric heat.

A Heat Pump works just like a conventional air conditioning system in the cooling mode.  It removes heat from the inside and sends it outside. When it goes into the heating mode an internal reversing valve effectively reverses the flow of refrigerant and allows it to remove heat from the outside and pump it to the inside heating your home.
