Indoor Air Quality -- 3 Common Problems And Their Simple Solutions

March 8, 2012 | Blog

Most homes are a work in progress. There is always something to do, whether it’s painting, cleaning, yard work or maintenance. While there are some chores or tasks that you can put off with little or no consequences, improving and maintaining your indoor air quality shouldn’t be one of them. There are three common problems that you may encounter with your indoor air. Let’s take a look at what they are, as well as an easy solution for each.

  1. Problem: Pollutants in the home are reducing indoor air quality.

Solution: Remove the sources of the pollution. Depending on the findings after you have your air quality tested, there are some simple adjustments you can make that will have a big impact on the quality of your indoor air. If you have paint cans, flammable materials or any type of chemicals within the home, remove them to the garage or preferably an outdoor shed. If natural gas is the problem, check stove and furnace lines.

  1. Problem: A lack of fresh air.

Solution: All homes need some fresh air to keep them from feeling and smelling stale.  Most homes get enough fresh air from the leaks around doors and windows to suffice in our climate.  If your home is exceptionally tight then you may need to add some forced fresh air into the living space.  Be careful that you do not add too much because the air you are bringing in is normally very warm and humid and it will make your air conditioning system work harder to overcome it.

  1. Problem: Mold and dust mites.

Solution: Install a whole-house dehumidifier if your air conditioner or heat pump isn’t adequately removing the moisture in your home that can nurture mold and dust mites. Installing The AC-Enhancer can increase the amount of moisture removed by your existing air conditioning system keeping your home dryer and more comfortable. Dust mites already exist in your home but they love moisture, and if your home has a humidity issue, you’ll have more than your fair share. The same applies with mold that can cause lung and other health issues.
