When your air conditioner is running, warm air coming from your HVAC vents is a cause for concern. There are various reasons why this might happen: it may be a mix-up in your HVAC settings, a maintenance issue, or a serious problem within the cooling system. Here are some of the most common causes and what to do to restore the flow of comfortably-cool air.
Incorrect Thermostat Settings
There are a couple of thermostat setting mistakes that can halt your A/Cs cool air output, but they’re easy to fix.
- The thermostat accidentally got switched to “heat” mode and simply needs resetting to “cool.”
- The fan is set to “on,” so it runs continuously and pushes out warm air in between air conditioning cycles. To have the fan run in tandem with the A/C so only cooled air gets distributed through the ducts, switch it “auto” instead.
Non-Functional Outdoor Unit
If the airflow coming from your registers turned warm suddenly, the issue may be a loss of power at the air conditioner’s outdoor unit. To get the unit going again, you may just need to reset a tripped switch or breaker, so check the emergency shutoff switch located near the unit, and the breaker in your main electrical panel. If you reset either and it trips a second time almost immediately, leave the unit off and call your HVAC pro to investigate further.
System Airflow Restrictions
Insufficient airflow through your HVAC system can cause a coil freeze-up or compressor shutdown that results in warm air output instead of cool. To solve this, make sure you have a clean air filter installed, and all your supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Outdoors, clear away any debris and overgrown vegetation on and around the condenser/compressor unit. If these fixes don’t help, your HVAC technician should check for a low refrigerant level, or a dirty condenser or evaporator coil that needs cleaning.
