Why Is My Heater Blowing Cold Air?

February 21, 2022 | Blog

When we actually get winter weather in Corpus Christi, we rush to crank on our heaters and bundle up under a mountain of blankets. But what happens when your heater starts doing the opposite of what you want it to do? Having your heater blow chilly air in the dead of winter can leave you freezing and frustrated. At Mathew’s CCAC, we want your heater to work exactly how it’s supposed to.

We’ve created a resource for you to reference for all of your heater questions, including why it may be blowing cold air and what you can do about it. Read below to learn more!

What’s Going On With My Heater?

It can be difficult to pin down what exactly is going on with your heater because it could be a number of things. There are ways to differentiate between common heater issues though, and some may be simpler than you think!

Check The Thermostat

Although this may seem like a given, sometimes it’s important to start with the easiest answer to the issue. Check your thermostat to make sure someone in your home didn’t accidentally change the thermostat to the cold setting.

If you have a smart thermostat, this can be a relatively easy mistake to make, with some units only requiring a small swipe to change the temperature.

Mechanical Issues

If you have an older furnace, it might be nearing the end of its life, causing your heating issues. Regular use throughout the lifetime of the furnace will eventually wear down the mechanical elements, especially if it is dirty. This is why it’s so important to have your heater regularly maintenance’d throughout the year.

Contact one of our HVAC technicians immediately if you suspect mechanical failure. We will repair or replace your unit and get your heat back firing on all cylinders!

A Clogged Filter

Having a clogged filter is one of the most common reasons that a heater may be blowing cold air. If it’s been a while since you checked your air and furnace filters, give them a look to see if that’s what is causing your issue. But, if your filters look fine, it could be that dust and debris have ended up in your unit. If this is the case, you’ll need to call in a professional to perform a thorough duct cleaning.

A Dirty Sensor

Another very common reason that a furnace is blowing cold air is a dirty flame sensor. The flame sensor is a component of gas heating systems that creates a current of electricity when you turn on your furnace. If the flame sensor is dirty, your furnace will initially blow hot air, but quickly turn to cold as it is released into your home.

Do I Need Heater Replacement Or Repair?

For the question of replacement or repair, it depends on what is causing your heater to blow cold air.

If you change your air filter or adjust your thermostat and your heater starts working properly, then you’ve got your culprit. Issues like mechanical failure and a dirty flame sensor need to be checked out by a professional to see if repair or replacement is needed.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
