The EnergyGuide Label: Read It And Save

August 28, 2012 | Blog

Equipment efficiency and monetary savings are two of the more significant factors that influence buying decisions. A reliable source for this information is the EnergyGuide label. This bright yellow label will give you important data about the product’s estimated energy usage, efficiency, capacity and operating cost. EnergyGuide labels also offer information you can use to compare other models and ensure you purchase equipment that’s the correct size for your home.

EnergyGuide labels are commonly found on HVAC equipment such as window and central air conditioners, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps and water heaters. They can also be found on major appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers and pool heaters.

EnergyGuide labels can include the following information:

General information: Manufacturer name, model number, and equipment size or capacity.
Key features: Information on the product’s primary features or capacity.
Estimated yearly operating cost: An estimate of the cost to run the item over the course of a year. The estimate is based on the model’s energy use and the average cost of electricity nationally
Cost range: Upper and lower range of operating costs for similar types of equipment, which allows easier comparison with other models and brands.
Estimated yearly electricity use: An estimate of the kilowatt hours of electricity the product will consume over a year.
Energy Star Label: If the particular piece of equipment has been Energy Star-certified, the Energy Star logo will be printed on the EnergyGuide label.

Some EnergyGuide labels will have different information. For example, an air conditioner label will include the unit’s energy efficiency ratio (EER), which is a numerical value indicating how efficiently the unit performs. Furnace labels will include the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating, which is a measure of efficiency for furnaces, and a listing of states where the unit can legally be installed.
