Improving Home Insulation Locks In 3 Perks

November 8, 2012 | Blog

Improving home insulation is inexpensive and easy to accomplish, and it can benefit your home enormously. But many homes across the country lack insulation or don’t have the right kind. Check your attic. If your insulation doesn’t cover the floor joists, or isn’t evenly distributed, then you probably need more.  It’s a one-time investment, but the difference it makes to your home can last for decades. Here are three perks of improving home insulation:

  1. Improved comfort. Insulation works by slowing down the flow of heat through your home. This means that during the hot and humid South Texas summer, insulation makes the heat take longer to permeate your home, keeping you cooler. Whereas in the winter, the heat takes longer to leave your house, helping you stay warm.
  2. Energy savings. Because of the increased comfort, improving home insulation also means you’ll have less need to rely on air conditioning and heating throughout the year. And since heating and A/C make up a significant percentage of your home’s annual energy consumption, you’ll end up saving energy and saving money. As an added perk, this reduction in energy usage leads to a decrease in harmful emissions. Studies have shown that improving home insulation can actually help to reduce air pollution, which in turn will significantly improve public health, reducing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases including asthma.
  3. Less noise. Improving home insulation doesn’t just improve your comfort; it can also improve your privacy. As well as absorbing heat, insulation can absorb sound. The density of insulation allows it to help block out sound from the outside, whether it’s a barking dog or a neighbor’s loud party. Insulation in your walls can also help to reduce the flow of sound within your home, from one room to another across closed doors.
