Apps and Your HVAC System: What Is the Connection?

July 7, 2020 | Blog

HVAC apps add the convenience and security of controlling your indoor environments with a phone or tablet. The technology to monitor and control temperatures inside your house from remote locations, as well as to be able to receive messages about HVAC system status, makes your home smarter, more efficient, and more comfortable. HVAC apps are available from many of the major brand names in heating and cooling and are compatible with those specific systems. Also, third-party HVAC apps for dedicated smart thermostats expand remote functions even further.

Here’s a general summary of what’s available in HVAC apps and smart systems for today’s homes.

Lennox iComfort

Lennox, a major manufacturer of home HVAC systems, provides both Android and iOS apps to control Lennox cooling and heating units. Features include:

  • Remote monitoring and adjustment of indoor temperatures.
  • One-touch remote activation of energy-saving mode when the house isn’t occupied.
  • Changing system functions, such as switching from cooling to heating.
  • Geofencing technology to track when you leave home and when you are approaching home so the system can adjust indoor temperatures accordingly.

Trane ComfortLink

The ComfortLink app offered by Trane, another major HVAC manufacturer, provides a bridge to the extensive Nexia smart home system, which includes cooling and heating as well as whole-house functions like lighting, security, and an array of electrical components. The Trane thermostat utilizes multiple sensors to support precise real-time temperature and humidity control via the app, as well as adjusting functions such as AC compressor and fan speed. The HVAC app also reports diagnostics to alert the homeowner, as well as a local Trane dealer, about any issues in the system, in addition to maintenance reminders.

Other Smart Home Apps

Ecobee and Nest smart home systems utilize “learning” thermostats that interface with dedicated HVAC apps to provide wide-ranging heating and cooling control. Both Ecobee and Nest utilize algorithms to analyze patterns of occupancy and temperature preferences, allowing the systems to generate scheduled thermostat changes automatically without input from the occupants of the home.

Great Company

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
