Half the energy used in the average American home goes for heating and cooling, according to some estimates, and of that amount, nearly 40 percent is lost due to insufficient insulation. In many cases, a savings of 20 to 40 percent on your energy bills is possible after installing the recommended R-value in the attic alone.

Once you have an estimate for adding more insulation, your utility company can supply you with figures for your yearly energy usage. Using these figures, simply divide by the expected percent of savings. This will give an annual savings after the installation. Divide the estimate for the overall cost of the new insulation, and this will give you the number of years to pay back on your investment.
