Do I Need to Replace My HVAC System?

February 6, 2020 | Blog

As hardworking as your HVAC system is, it’s no wonder that parts occasionally wear out and need to be replaced. But there comes a day when replacing parts may just be putting a bandage on a greater problem. That’s when it’s time to look into HVAC replacement. But how does a homeowner know when that time has arrived? Following are some hints.

Time to Replace the HVAC?

1. Age. If your HVAC system is 10 years old or older, it may be time to replace it. Although it may last a few more years, older HVAC systems are not nearly as efficient as the new models, so you’re likely missing out on energy savings. Furthermore, as the system ages, it may become harder to get matching parts, as the technology is changing rapidly. But the bottom line is that you don’t want to be caught at the height of summer or winter with a broken-down HVAC.

2. Continuous breakdowns. If the HVAC keeps breaking down, it may be time to say farewell and move up to a new model. You may be spending more money on repairs than a new model would cost.

3. Energy inefficiency. Has your HVAC system grown less energy-efficient over the years? If you’ve kept up with repairs and maintenance but the old workhorse struggles to reach set temperature points, you might be better off looking for a newer model. Maybe you’re noticing that the energy bills just keep going up (and it has nothing to do with the price of oil), or perhaps you just never feel cool or warm in your home. A replacement is likely in order.

4. Refrigerant leak. If your old A/C has started to leak R-22 refrigerant, it’s probably time to replace the entire system. R-22 is no longer being manufactured; supplies are dwindling and costs are sky-high. Time to move on to a model that uses a newer refrigerant. Also, be prepared to replace the heating system as well. The older technology does not mesh well with the new.
