Your heat pump represents an important investment in home comfort that you want to keep running well for years. In general, a heat pump should last about 12 years, depending on how much it’s used and how well it’s maintained. Routine heat pump maintenance is the most effective way to keep the system operating efficiently, economically and reliably for as many years as possible.
Here are some things you can do to help your heat pump reach and exceed its normal life expectancy:
Clean or change filters
Regularly clean or change the filters in the unit. Dirty filters block needed airflow and are a major source of heat pump failure. Fresh filters will help keep the unit up and running longer.
Clean coils and outdoor unit
Clean both interior and exterior coils to help keep airflow within the unit at a consistent level. Regularly check exterior coils and the entire outdoor unit and remove any build-ups of dirt, leaves, grass or other material.
Clean fan
Shut off the unit’s fan and clean away dirt, dust, lint or other debris. Oil or lubricate the fan to keep it moving smoothly.
Clean registers and vents
Keep dirt, dust and debris from accumulating in the supply and return vents. Clean registers and vents prevent debris from being drawn back into the unit’s air supply where it can build up inside the heat pump or be blown back into your home’s indoor air.
Schedule a maintenance call with an HVAC professional – Hire an HVAC pro to give your heat pump an expert inspection and maintenance routine. The technician will:
- Inspect and seal ducts
- Check air flow
- Check and maintain refrigerant levels
- Calibrate thermostat
- Clean and tighten electrical connections
- Lubricate motors
- Tighten belts (if it’s belt-driven)
- Verify proper unit operation
