In a high-humidity environment, such as that on the Texas Gulf Coast, it’s extremely important to control the humidity level in your home. High humidity levels can lead to problems such as mold and mildew, unpleasant musty odors, and damage to furnishings and the house structure itself. Not to mention the uncomfortable feeling.
Air conditioning will help, but it will not take care of all the humidity problems you may be experiencing. Air conditioners are designed to remove heat from the air, and while this can result in a drop in interior humidity levels, it is not true dehumidification. The newer higher efficiency air conditioning systems achieve some of their increase in efficiency by removing less moisture from the air.
In the absence of an actual dehumidification system, however, a device called The A/C Enhancer can improve the results you see from your air conditioner.
In most cooling systems, there are two trouble spots where The A/C Enhancer can help. First, air conditioners are generally the least efficient when they startup. Peak efficiency and dehumidification levels are reached after 8 to 10 minutes of operation. Second, the interior coil of the air conditioner is routinely wet from condensation when the unit stops. Some of this moisture will remain when the unit restarts; that moisture will be re-evaporated into your household environment, increasing humidity. At this point, the coil needs another eight minutes of operation to reach its best level of cooling and dehumidification.
The A/C enhancer alleviates these problems by allowing the condenser to cool the air conditioner’s inside coil below dew point temperature — the temperature at which moisture in the air condenses on the coil — before the blower activates. This eliminates the re-evaporation of moisture into the house, decreasing humidity. The pre-cooling also means it takes less time for the unit to reach its peak operating state, resulting in more efficient operation and less waste of energy.
