Five Steps to Reset Your AC Unit

July 27, 2021 | Blog

Regardless of if you’re a storm lover or hater, they can cause issues for your air conditioning system. With more and more powerful storms hitting Texas every year, power outages are to be expected. Not only do we lose the lights and television, but we also lose our air conditioning! Once the storm finally calms and the power finally comes back on, sometimes your AC unit still won’t turn back on. What can you do?

CCAC is here to offer some guidance on AC reset. Luckily, there are some easy steps that you can take to reset your AC unit after a terrible storm.

Hurricanes and other powerful storms can cause damage to your AC system. Before resetting your air conditioning system, check for any physical damage. Debris can be blown into the outside unit during a storm. If there is electrical damage is harder to find. The following steps can help determine if there is any electrical damage.

Five Steps to Reset Your AC Unit

Step 1: Turn off the AC system through the thermostat.

You need to shut down your AC unit before you can reset it. It’s a lot like how your laptop shuts off to restart. The easiest way to turn off your AC unit is through the thermostat. There should be a system switch on the device that you will push to the OFF position.

Step 2: Turn off the AC system through the circuit breaker.

We aren’t done yet! You also need to turn off the AC unit at the circuit breaker too. Find the switch for your central air conditioning unit at the circuit breaker and flip it to the OFF position.

Step 3: Now that you turned it off… Turn it back on!

Turn on the AC unit at the circuit breaker! Return to the circuit breaker and flip the switch for your central air condition unit to the ON position.

Step 4: Wait!

Now that you’ve turned your AC system off and on again, all there’s left to do is wait. You’ll need to wait about 30 minutes for your central air conditioning system to reset.

Step 5: Turn it back on at the thermostat!

After the half-hour has passed, turn your AC unit back on at the thermostat. If your AC system resets, that’s a good sign that it didn’t take any damage from the power outage. But, if your AC unit doesn’t turn on after following these steps to reset it, your AC system probably suffered some electrical damage. It’s also a good idea to get your unit inspected following a strong storm and power outage, even if your unit resets.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
