Furnace Filter Arrows: What Do They Mean?

October 25, 2018 | Blog

Furnace Filter Arrows: What Do They Mean?Proper installation of a furnace filter means making certain itโ€™s facing the right direction. The filter cleans airflow returning to the furnace from rooms throughout your entire house. In a typical residential HVAC system, well over 1,000 cubic feet per minute of air passes through that filter while the system is running. For proper filtration function, the filter must be oriented so the correct side faces toward the furnace unit, with the arrows pointing in the direction of return airflow.

The air filter performs these vital functions:

  • Preserving air quality. Household air typically contains particulates and pollutants than can degrade indoor air quality. These range from common dust and dirt particles you can see to microscopic allergens such as pollen and mold spores. Because the total volume of air inside the house circulates through the filter multiple times during every 24 hours, a clean, properly installed filter is the first line of defense to ensure a healthy indoor environment.
  • Lowering costs. Changing the filter regularly ensures optimum system airflow. This supports maximum energy efficiency and helps keep monthly heating costs low.
  • Maintaining system components. Particulates in household air can also accelerate wear and tear of furnace and air conditioner parts, leading to diminished heating and cooling performance as well as more frequent repairs.

Changing The Air Filter

Replacing the air filter is part of regular system maintenance provided by a qualified HVAC technician. If youโ€™ve never done it yourself, itโ€™s a good idea to have a trained field tech demonstrate the correct procedure.

  • Locate the filter slot inside the return duct where it meets the furnace.
  • Slide out the old filter and discard.
  • Inspect the new filter for directional arrows printed on the edge of the filter.
  • Slide the new filter into the slot so that the directional arrows point toward the furnace unit and away from the return duct. Therefore, air moving through the return duct should flow in the direction of the arrow as it enters the furnace.
