Decoration storage in hot, humid climates like ours is always a challenge, especially since most of the homes in the region donโt have basements. The decorations need to be in a place where they wonโt be affected by the heat or the humidity. Itโs natural to want to keep them out of the attic, where temperatures soar well into the 100s on a hot, sunny day for months on end.
Avoid Fire Hazards
Another place you may not have thought of as being bad for the holiday decorations is your furnace closet or room. While itโs probably indoors where you keep it comfortable and wonโt harm the Christmas things, it can damage your furnace and HVAC system. While the sentimental value the ornaments and decorations have is important, itโs also critical to keep the environment around your HVAC system clear.
The HVAC System Needs Its Own Space
Your HVAC system needs plenty of room around it for adequate ventilation. Itโs especially important when itโs in the heating mode. If you do need to use the extra space around your HVAC equipment, leave enough room around it so that HVAC technicians can easily move around it to service and repair it.
Safe Decoration Storage Options
The garage may be a good place for decoration storage. Itโs probably cooler than the attic during the hottest parts of the day. Plastic tubs with tight-fitting lids will keep the bugs out of the boxes. As long as the tubs are free from anything resembling food (like decorated cookies or candy), they shouldnโt attract any insects or vermin.
