How Variable-Speed Blower Motors Affect Comfort And Efficiency

January 17, 2012 | Blog

When it is time to replace the indoor equipment you really owe it to yourself to at least consider a Variable Speed Blower system.  They come in Gas Furnace models and models for Electric Heat or Heat Pumps.  There are basically three types of blowers available in most central air conditioning split systems.  The standard efficiency Permanent Split Capacitor or PSC motor, the higher efficiency DC Drive motor, and the High-Efficiency Variable Speed motor.

The DC Drive motor is basically the same as the Variable Speed motor in the fact that it is a more efficient blower motor and pushes air against a much higher back pressure than the standard PSC motor.  The added advantage to the Variable Speed motor is that it has the circuitry built in to vary the speed of the motor to maintain a constant volume of air.  This means that as the filter starts to get dirty and more restrictive the Variable Speed motor ramps up to maintain the proper air flow volume.

The standard PSC motor consumes more energy to push the air through the unit and the ductwork than the DC Drive or the Variable Speed.  This combined with the extra heat generated by the PSC motor will cost you more on your cooling and heating bills.  When you add the comfort and efficiency of moving the proper amount of air all the time it makes it well worth the extra to upgrade to either the DC Drive or the Variable Speed.   Another added bonus is that the DC Drive and Variable Speed blowers typically run quieter than the standard PSC motors.

Great Company

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
