HVAC Preventative Maintenance Checklist: What To Keep In Check

As the summer season approaches, it becomes increasingly important that your HVAC equipment is running both effectively and efficiently. Here are a few quick HVAC preventative maintenance tips that you can attend to right now:

Schedule an Annual Inspection

To keep your HVAC equipment running smoothly, you should schedule an annual service call with a qualified technician each year. In addition to ensuring efficiency, this will also help you identify any problems with the system early on, so that you can get them fixed before it affects your comfort level.

Inspect Your Home’s Thermostat

You may be surprised to learn that heating and cooling problems are often the result of a thermostat that isn’t working quite as well as it had been in the past. First, make sure you’ve upgraded to a smart thermostat, then test it every once in awhile to keep it in good working order.

Check the Ductwork for Damage and Debris

Many problems attributed to a home’s HVAC system is often due to either damage to your ductwork or debris found inside it. Every month or so, be sure to inspect the ductwork thoroughly, and then repair any damage that you find and/or clear out any debris.

Clean or Replace the Filter

Your HVAC system’s air filter has one job to do, and that’s to catch dirt, debris, and contaminants so that they don’t get recycled into your air. Since these filters get filled up whenever your equipment is running, you should check them once per month and replace them as needed.

Keep the Outdoor Unit Free of Debris

There are many parts to your HVAC system that are needed to make it run smoothly, and a lot of people seem to forget about the outdoor unit. If your system includes an outdoor unit, make sure that you keep it free of any debris such as trash, bird’s nests, grass, stray branches, etc.
