When was the last time that you upgraded your thermostat? If it’s been a while, it’s likely that your home contains an analog thermostat.
Although it may seem like nothing is wrong with your current thermostat, there are several viable reasons why it may be smart to upgrade to a programmable thermostat.
First of all, many of the analog thermostats use a mercury switch to regulate the temperature in your home. Mercury is a poisonous toxin, and if it’s released in your home, it can cause serious health complications to all inhabitants. It is especially important to remove a mercury thermostat from your home if someone in your household is pregnant, of childbearing age, or is a young child as mercury can negatively affect the development of the brain and nervous system.
Another reason why you should consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat is that it will improve the comfort level inside your home. Analog thermostats require you to manually set the temperature every time you want to make an adjustment; however, programmable thermostats remember a temperature range that you like to maintain within your home and automatically adjusts the temperature accordingly.
Many people choose to upgrade to a programmable thermostat due to the energy and cost savings that it can offer. For example, if your house is empty during the day while you are at work, you can program your thermostat to either be a higher or cooler temperature (depending on the season). About an hour or so before you return to the house, you can program your thermostat to adjust the temperature to your desired comfort. The efficiency that a programmable thermostat can offer leads to more money in your wallet.
