Indoor air quality is extremely important to your health. It’s crucial that you take the proper steps to ensure that you are breathing clean, healthy air on a regular basis.
There are three methods you can use to boost the air quality in your home. They are:
- Eliminate the source of pollution
- Improve ventilation
- Utilize air purifying devices
By using the proper combination of these three methods, you can significantly improve indoor air quality.
Eliminating the Source of Pollution
More often than not, air pollutants in your living space can be controlled. You can seal off the source of the pollution and eliminate its health-threatening threats. Other sources such as your gas stove, you can use less often, or with proper ventilation to minimize the potential harmful effects. And, if you have smokers who live in your home, you can send them outside to smoke.
Improving Ventilation
Ventilating your home is one way of reducing pollutants, but normally is not the answer in our climate. Since it is normally either too hot, too cold, or too humid in our area we can very seldom open our windows and let the breeze blow through our homes without feeling very uncomfortable. When taking a shower, or boiling something on the stove an exhaust fan should be run to take the humidity out of the air and discharge it outside. That way your air conditioning equipment does not have the extra burden of trying to remove it. Air mixing equipment such as HRV’s and ERV’s are not practical in our climate either because we generally have way to much humidity in the outside air for these devices to work effectively.
Utilizing Air Purifying Devices
There’s a lot of air quality equipment available on the market today, including:
- Portable air cleaners
- Whole-house air cleaning systems
- UV light purification systems
These devices are made to eliminate health-threatening pollutants from the air in your home. By removing harmful airborne particles, you can boost the air quality in your living space. It’s also crucial to your home’s air quality that you replace or clean your HVAC system filters on a regular basis.
