Using Your HVAC to Combat Back-to-School GermsWith the kids back in school, you might start thinking that you can take it a little easier in your daily routine. Well, think again! The truth is that your kids will now be bringing germs into your household in record numbers. Luckily, fighting germs with HVAC strategies will work wonders in keeping your home safe.

Let’s take a look at a few ways to combat back-to-school germs:

Keep the Air Flowing

When your air recycles throughout your home with no means to escape, any germs that have been brought in will stick around. Opening your windows and using ventilation fans will go a long way toward solving this problem.

Replace the Air Filter

A typical air filter needs to be either cleaned or replaced every 1-3 months. Tending to the filter on a regular basis will ensure that more germs are captured, which will decrease the numbers that are floating around in your home’s air, thereby lessening possible exposure.

Install UV Lights 

The installation of ultraviolet lights can go a long way to cleaning your air of germs and other particulates. UV lights break down these offending organisms at the molecular level, rendering them inert. Plus, in addition to UV lights that you can install within your HVAC system, there are standalone units that allow you to bathe various surfaces in ultraviolet rays to keep them germ-free.

Use an Air Cleaner

Air cleaners are great at ridding your air of contaminants, and the price of running one is very low. What you want to do is hunt down a model that is equipped with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter.

Wash Your Linens

Germs attach themselves to a number of surfaces, but none quite as much as linens. Therefore, it’s important that you keep your sheets, pillows, towels. blankets, etc. This will keep them from spreading once they’
