Common HVAC Issues in Winter

We’re lucky in the Coastal Bend area that we escape the worst of winter weather, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t have some issues with the operation of our heating system. Here are some common HVAC issues to be on the lookout for this winter in your home.

Uneven Heating

Most houses have areas where the heating and cooling just doesn’t measure up. The reasons can be many, but most often, it has to do with the duct system and an inadequate amount of air being distributed to certain areas. Open dampers for a start. You might also look into zoned heating and cooling. Or, just add a space heater or two.

Inadequate Heating

Again, this can be caused by many issues, but one of the most common is a dirty air filter. When the air filter is dirty, air can’t flow properly, and the HVAC system cannot cool or heat adequately. Try this solution before you look for other reasons for your heating system not heating adequately.

The System Won’t Turn On

Often, this problem is easily solved by adjusting the thermostat — that is, raising it a few degrees so the heating comes on. If the thermostat doesn’t seem to be working, check the batteries or wiring (look for loose wires). It may be that the thermostat needs to be replaced. Also, check the controls to make sure the system is set to “auto.”

A Frozen Heat Pump

The defrost cycle of the heat pump must work properly for the system to do its job in the winter. Otherwise, the outdoor component may become encased in ice in cold weather. If the defrost cycle is not coming on, you may need to clear the unit of ice — and then have an HVAC technician repair the unit.

The Furnace Burners Are Dirty

When the furnace burner gets dirty (and it will), the flame will burn orange. It should be burning with an even blue flame. An orange flame is a sign the burner needs cleaning.
