A Complete Insulation System Includes These Components

October 20, 2011 | Blog

When most people think of insulation, they picture rolls of yellow fiberglass or fluffy white foam. However, these common insulating materials are only one of the components required to build a complete insulating system. Along with standard insulating materials, today’s homes utilize a variety of additional materials to reduce airflow and eliminate moisture buildup.

Modern insulation systems are designed to perform three main functions:

  • Stop the movement of air from one space to another
  • Reduce heat transfer from warm areas to cool areas
  • Prevent moisture build-up inside the home

To accomplish these tasks, they rely on a combination of several components including air barriers, insulating materials and vapor diffusion retarders.

  • Air barriers are typically applied to the exterior of a home underneath the siding. Common air barriers include house wraps, plywood or felt paper. These barriers are sealed tightly to prevent air movement between interior and exterior spaces.
  • Insulation is used to fill cavities within the shell of the building. Its main function is to prevent heat transfer between the interior and exterior of the home.
  • Vapor diffusion retarders reduce the amount of moisture that is transferred from warm spaces to cool spaces. These barriers, which are usually made from plastic sheeting, prevent moisture from building up inside the walls where it could potentially lead to mold or rot.

By combining all of these different components, a modern insulating system can reduce indoor humidity, improve energy efficiency and keep the temperature inside your home comfortable year-round.
