Air conditioning is great for beating the summer heat, but as you know all too well, it can be expensive. This is especially the case in a region with a long, muggy cooling season like ours in the Corpus Christi area. If you want to cut your summer energy bills, now’s a good time to begin thinking about air conditioning efficiency. In South Texas, the cooling season gets an early spring start.
One important air conditioning efficiency consideration is to make sure your A/C is appropriately sized for your home. Air conditioners offer the added bonus of dehumidifying the air, and if your air conditioner is oversized, it will be less effective at doing so. Not only does this affect your comfort, but air conditioners run less efficiently when the interior air hasn’t been appropriately dehumidified. In the humid climate of the Coastal Bend, even appropriately sized air conditioners may not dehumidify the air as much as is ideal for efficient operation. Air conditioners that are undersized also will struggle to provide sufficient cooling on the hottest days.
If you are looking to upgrade your air conditioner, here are some key features to look for to ensure efficient operation:
- Make sure the system match up is designed for humidity control as well ad efficiency. The more efficient the A/C, the higher its SEER number. Systems can be matched up to get a higher SEER rating but remove less moisture from the air. In our humid climate we need both to maintain comfort and energy savings.
- The Contractor you choose makes a world of difference. Choosing the right contractor to install your system is more important than the equipment itself. A poorly designed or poorly installed system will not give you the comfort and efficiency that you are paying for.
- Make sure you have routine maintenance done on your system. Look for a contractor that offers maintenance agreements to keep your equipment operating at its peak efficiency.
- Use the cooling effect of ceiling fans to make your A/C’s job easier. The fan will provide a wind-chill effect that make rooms feel cooler than their set temperature.
