A/C Performance Got You Down? Consider An Upgrade While 2011 Tax Credits Are Still In Effect

November 15, 2011 | Blog

If your home cooling system hasn’t been working well or shows signs it may be ready to fail, now’s the time to replace it while the 2011 Consumer Energy Efficiency tax credits are still in effect. The U.S. government offers these tax credits for energy efficiency on many types of energy-efficient HVAC equipment you purchase for your home. Act quickly; many of the credits expire at the end of 2011.

The tax credit amounts to 10 percent of the cost of the equipment, up to $500, or a specified amount ranging from $50 to $300. The equipment must be purchased for an existing home that is your main residence. These tax credits do not apply to new construction and rentals.

Tax credits for energy efficiency are available for these cooling systems:

Central air conditioners

Central air conditioning units are eligible for tax credits up to $300.

For a split system to be eligible for the tax credit, it must have an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) rating of 13 or greater and a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 16 or greater.

Package systems with an EER of 12 or greater and a SEER of 14 or greater qualify for the credits.

Split systems have a main outdoor unit containing the condenser and compressor, an indoor cabinet with the evaporator coil, and an air handler. Package systems contain the condenser, compressor and evaporator coil within a single cabinet.

Heat pumps

Air-source heat pumps qualify for tax credits up to $300.

Tax credits are available for split systems with an EER rating of 12.5 or greater and a SEER of 15 or greater. Package systems must have an EER of 12 or greater and a SEER of 14 or greater to quality.
