Homeowners need to employ a combination of strategies to achieve ultimate comfort in their Corpus Christi-area homes. While your HVAC system is your primary source for mechanical heating and cooling, it relies on additional factors like balanced humidity, indoor air quality, air sealing and insulation for ultimate efficacy.
The following home comfort tips will help your HVAC system work to its maximum potential for your family’s comfort:
Humidity. The EPA recommends that indoor humidity levels be between 25 and 40 percent during the winter months, and not more than 60 percent during the summer. In addition to protecting your home from mold and mildew damage, these levels will keep the appropriate level of moisture in the air for personal comfort. Make sure your HVAC equipment is sized appropriately for your home. Over- or undersized equipment will make it difficult to control moisture levels. You can also use a whole-house dehumidifier for those months when humidity levels are excessive.
Air purification. Allergies and other respiratory problems are often linked to poor indoor air quality. Without proper air cleaning and filtration, your forced air system will circulate contaminants throughout your home. While basic air filters will trap larger dust, allergens, and particulate matter, purchase air filters with higher MERV ratings to help control smaller particles. Also, make sure you install carbon monoxide detectors in recommended locations.
Air sealing and insulation. Another way to boost home comfort, as well as energy efficiency, is to make sure your home is sealed and insulated. Sealing air leaks in your home’s envelope will prevent heat loss/gain, regardless of the season. If you live in an older home, you may want to upgrade your insulation, especially in the attic and crawl spaces. This will also prevent undesirable heat transfer that leads to excessive energy consumption.
