So you’ve been using your air conditioner for a while, and it just isn’t performing the way it has in past summers. You may be wondering if you can nudge a few more summers out of your system or whether it’s time to consider a replacement. Generally, there are three telltale signs that an air conditioner is nearing the end of the line.
- Have your energy bills gone up dramatically this summer? The rates your utility is charging might not be the culprit. As an air conditioner ages, it becomes considerably less efficient. It has to work harder to keep you comfortable. That means you energy bills are higher.
- Are you less comfortable in your home? Does your home feel clammy? An air conditioner that’s nearing the end of the line can’t adequately dehumidify your home, as it has in years past. Even if you haven’t experienced a considerable difference in your comfort level, you may have noticed more moisture problems in your home, such as mold and mildew.
- Does your air conditioner have more than 10 years on it? Any system that’s more than a decade old is considerably less efficient than today’s systems, which can have seasonal energy efficiency ratios in the 20s. Your present unit may be a SEER 6 or a SEER 10. Consider the energy savings you could achieve with one of today’s high-efficiency systems, which, by the way, also qualify for a 30 percent energy tax credit.
