Algae Growing on Your A/C? Use These Quick Removal Tips

January 8, 2015 | Blog

Dust isn’t the only problem you have to deal with when it comes to your air conditioning system. The dark, damp environs of your A/C system are also the perfect breeding ground for algae and mildew. Algae growth on your A/C not only interferes with how well your system works, but it can also cause a variety of health issues.

How Algae Forms

As your A/C cools and dehumidifies your home’s indoor air, it also causes moisture to condense from a vapor into a liquid form. The resulting condensation normally collects inside a tray and eventually drains away from the A/C. However, drain blockages can create warm, stagnant pools of water, promoting algae and mildew growth.

What You Can Do About It

If you find algae growing on your A/C, there are several ways you can easily deal with this issue:

  • Maintain a clean home and A/C system. Keeping your home spotless not only prevents dirt and dust buildup, but it also reduces the chance of algae growth.
  • Keep drain lines clear of organic debris. You can use a diluted solution of Vinegar and water to discourage algae growth. If the drip pan is already overflowing, use a shop vacuum to remove any water and clogs responsible.
  • Replace air filters every month. A dirty filter can promote algae growth, especially if dust and other airborne debris make their way past a clogged filter.
  • Have your A/C system inspected on a yearly basis. Annual inspection and maintenance is a preventative step that’s worth a pound of cure.
