Down here in the Coastal Bend, it’s nearly impossible to survive the hot, sticky summers without air conditioning. But are you getting the most out of your A/C unit? Are your electric bills high even though you’re finding your house isn’t as cool as you’d like it to be? It just might be your attic that’s keeping your A/C from being its most efficient.
Proper attic insulation keeps your heater and your air conditioner from having to work so hard to cover your house. We should all remember by now that heat rises while cool air sinks. So in the thick of summer, the hot air throughout the house makes its way to the attic and can make that space unbearably hot. In the summer time it can get up to 150 degrees in the attic, and that heat is just radiating back into the house through the ceiling. The only thing that stands in its way is your attic insulation. Your A/C unit is probably already working pretty hard, and now it’s trying to cool off that extra heat, and that’s a heavy load.
But with adequate attic insulation you install a barrier to reduce the amount of heat that is transferred into your home from the attic. Attic ventilation is also an important factor to keep the air in the attic cooler. And if the air you’re trying to cool isn’t as hot, your air conditioner doesn’t have to work so hard to cool it. The unit works more efficiently, your electric bill is lower, and your house is comfortable.
