Homeowners are always on a quest to save money everywhere they can, and decreasing energy usage is a great way to do that. We’d like to help you out, so we’ve put together four small changes that you can begin implementing right now:
Schedule Yearly HVAC Maintenance
Your HVAC equipment is only as good as the condition it’s in. To keep your system running smoothly and efficiently, it must be maintained by a qualified technician. We suggest that you schedule such maintenance once each year to keep your unit in tip-top shape. Doing so will ensure that it remains energy-efficient, which will lower your energy bills.
Upgrade the Thermostat
Over the years, many homeowners have moved away from manual thermostats to programmable ones that offer loads of new features. The biggest change with these models is the ability to set the days and times during which your HVAC system switches on and off. Having this level of control will quickly decrease your energy usage if utilized wisely.
Seal Air Leaks in Your Home
Every home, without fail, succumbs to air leaks. As air seeps through, your HVAC system must work longer in order to provide the same level of comfort. The biggest problem areas are the edges around your doors and windows. You can seal them quickly with the use of caulk, spray foam, or weather stripping, depending on the area and severity of the issue.
Change Your Lightbulbs
Thomas Edison might not be too happy about it, but traditional lightbulbs are quickly going the way of the dodo bird. Over the past several years, homeowners have begun switching to more energy-efficient types such as CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulbs and LED (light-emitting diode) ones. Both of these types use far less energy than traditional bulbs and neither one cost much at all.
