This is one of the best times of year to be a Texas Gulf Coast resident. All the spring breakers have left, and you can relax and enjoy some of the most beautiful weather we see in this part of the country. This year don’t let the summer heat ruin your serenity; cut your cooling costs with a “smart” programmable thermostat.
Choosing a Programmable Thermostat
It’s almost a necessity to have a programmable thermostat these days. Energy is getting more expensive and the weather is getting hotter. Increasingly, however, smart technology (“smart” as in “smart-phone”) is being incorporated into programmable thermostats. When you decide to upgrade, just make sure you make the “smart” decision:
- Seven-Day Settings – Choose a unit that allows you to program individual settings for each day of the week. Use this feature to raise the temperature for eight-hour blocks during the day when nobody is home and at night when everybody’s asleep. Don’t set the temperature too warm during the day while you are away or it may take more energy to cool the house back down when you get home than what it would have to maintain it. Generally no more than two degrees is recommended.
- Communication – It’s also very important that the thermostat can communicate with you. Most smart units do this over the Internet so they need a connection that’s always available. They can keep track of peak-hour rates with your electricity provider, monitor the humidity in your home and even test your air for toxins. All of these features allow you to set the temperature most efficiently without losing any comfort.
- Maintenance Reminders – High-quality units can monitor the health of your entire heating and cooling system and remind you when service is needed or operations are not efficient. Sometimes they can even point out the culprit so you can get the system back to peak performance.
Taking Advantage of the Features
When choosing a programmable thermostat, it’s crucial that you pick a device that is right for you. Some of the new thermostats have a lot of extra features that may be neat and high tech, but will you really use them? Simple to use and with the features that you will actually use are the key ingredients.
