Clean Air Involves Comprehensive Air Quality Control

The quality of the air inside your home has a significant effect on both your comfort and your health. A comprehensive system of air quality control, applied consistently and regularly, will give you clean air that’s free of things you don’t want to inhale.

Effective improvement of indoor air quality requires source control, ventilation, and air purification and cleaning.

Source control
The best way to improve indoor air quality is to reduce or eliminate pollutants at their source. You can cut down on dust in the air by keeping ductwork, registers and vents clean and unobstructed.  Appliances such as gas stoves can be adjusted to put out fewer emissions.  Openings to the outside or attic space need to be sealed to reduce the influx of dust and dirt particles.  Recessed can lights are a major opening to the attic space if they are not sealed properly.

Watch for anything in your home that could emit or stir up dust, smoke or other pollutants. Reducing emissions at their source is much cheaper than increasing ventilation; this can lead to increased energy costs as your heating or cooling system works harder to compensate for temperature fluctuations.

Ventilation
While ventilation can reduce the amount of indoor pollutants it can also bring the problems of outdoors inside.  In our humid climate it is very rarely appropriate to ventilate to reduce indoor air pollutants.  Exhaust fans should be used to ventilate bathroom areas when showering to reduce the amount of moisture in the home.  These fans must move at least 100 cfm of air in order to remove the water vapor from the shower.  Also kitchen exhaust fans should be used when boiling or simmering to remove the excess moisture generated.

Air purification and cleaning
Invest in a mechanical air purification and cleaning system. Even small table-top models remove substantial amounts of pollution from your indoor air, including particulates, microorganisms, vapors and odors, and smoke. Larger whole-house models give you the greatest amount of air purification for your money. The most effective units connect to your central air conditioning system and filter all the air that passes through it.  You can get filtration systems that are up MERV 16 rating.
