Portable or Whole-House Dehumidifiers: Answer These Questions and Decide

December 24, 2013 | Blog

When winter air turns moist it can cause all sorts of problems for your home. Typically, you rely on the air conditioner to keep humidity levels in check. But when outside temperatures drop and you don’t need air conditioning, humidity levels can rise. Control moisture issues with a dehumidifier. Options in dehumidifiers include portable units you can move from room to room or a whole-house model that is part of your main heating and cooling system. Consider which dehumidifiers are right for your family’s needs by looking closely at the benefits and drawbacks of each type. Ask yourself:

  • Does my home smell musty?
  • Do the pipes sweat?
  • Do I have trouble sleeping due to a clammy/stuffy feeling?
  • Does my family suffer from allergies?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then a whole-house dehumidifier could work for you. It ensures moisture levels throughout the entire house stay consistent to avoid allergy and mold issues, sticky floors and sweating pipes.

If you answered no to most of the questions, but still feel a little excess moisture in certain rooms of your home, perhaps a portable dehumidifier is right for your home. Portable dehumidifiers can easily be moved from room to room as needed. They must be emptied on a regular basis when the moisture bucket becomes full, or they can be set up to drain into a sink or floor drain.
