No matter the season, home comfort is the primary function of your heating and cooling system. If you’re seeing a reduction in your home’s comfort level, it’s tempting just to turn your furnace or air conditioner up higher to compensate. This might work, but it’s not wise; you’ll waste energy and money and still not have the problem solved.
If your house isn’t staying as cool or warm as expected, look to the ductwork system to find likely sources of air loss and energy seepage. So much conditioned air travels through the ductwork that it’s very possible that leaks there are depriving you of the home comfort you’re paying for. As much as 20 percent of the air flowing through the ductwork can be lost because of leaks, holes and loose connections.
The advantages of duct sealing can quickly be seen in improvements in your home’s comfort level and in real cash savings on your energy bills. Other benefits include:
- Duct sealing improves indoor air quality, which also directly contributes to you and your family’s comfort. Sealed ducts have less opportunity to pull in contaminants, particles and fumes that get circulated into your home’s interior air.
- Duct sealing is good for the environment, since it cuts down on wasted energy. Less fuel is burned by energy-generating facilities, which means decreased emissions in the air and an overall reduction in the use of limited natural resources.
- Duct sealing improves home safety, reducing the possibility of exposure to carbon monoxide, the nearly undetectable poisonous gas produced as a by-product of combustion in your heating system.
Check your ducts for loose connections and elbows, gaps between sections, cracks in the metal, or ill-fitting segments. Make sure parts fit together tightly, and seal joints with mastic or metal tape. Or have us come out and do a ductwork evaluation for you to make sure your ducts are sealed and insulated properly.
