Is Your Duct System Design Delivering?

March 20, 2014 | Blog

One of the most neglected parts of your home likely is its HVAC system’s ductwork.

Why Is Ducting Important

If your air conditioner or furnace is considered the heart of your home, then your ducting is its circulation system and, when its arteries get clogged up, you have a problem.

It’s possible that your ducting needs some attention. It may be blocked, dirty, or there may be leaks. It’s also possible your filter is blocked, reducing air flow from the air conditioner.

Importance of Good Design

Duct system design is not that simple; as you will know from the wind, air flow can be quite unpredictable. It’s important that each room gets enough air to cool it down in warm weather or to heat it in the winter.

If you are designing your ducting, here are some points to consider:

  • Work out the size of each room.
  • Decide how to get the air from your air conditioner or furnace to each room.
  • Lay out the main ducts that will take air to the different areas of the home.
  • Make sure this ducting is large enough to avoid reducing the air flow.
  • Use smaller ducting off this central ducting for each room.
  • Keep the length of these smaller ducts short to maintain air flow.

If you need assistance, get your duct system design done by someone who has experience and who can calculate the air flows to each room.

Other things to consider are:

  • The size and location of the fan
  • Where to put the filter
  • Insulation of the ducting
  • Location of furnace and air conditioner

A poorly designed duct system could waste 40% of your energy, so it’s important to get the design right by consulting an expert.

Consequences of Poor Duct Design

Poorly designed and maintained ducting will create the following problems:

  • High utility bills
  • Premature air conditioner and furnace failure
  • Poor air filtration
  • Clogged ducts
  • Unsightly marks around outlets
  • Insects, damp and mold ingress to ducting
