You’ve been daydreaming for months about summer vacation and your bags are packed. Before you leave the house, however, here are a few quick and easy tasks that can help you can save energy dollars while you’re away.
- Unplug electronics. You might think that leaving the house for a week will result in a lower energy bill. However, there are many devices in your home that use power even when they’re turned off. Televisions, computers, printers, coffee makers, microwaves, toaster ovens, and anything else that displays the time, even when not actively being used, can “vampire” electricity and waste your money. Unplug these items from the wall or turn off all power strips to save energy dollars.
- Turn off the water heater. Why waste money heating water you won’t be using for a several days? Your water heater should have a temperature knob that can be set to the “off” or “vacation” position, or shut off the breaker in your electrical panel to save energy dollars.
- Conserve on climate control. Your air conditioning can consume huge amounts of energy, all of which is wasted on an empty house. If you are concerned about high summer temperatures damaging delicate electronic equipment or other items in your home, you may not want to turn the system off completely. In fact because of our high heat and humidity we do not recommend turning it off. But to save energy set the thermostat around 85 degrees.
- Shut off the lights. For security purposes, it’s a great idea to have a radio or a light set up on a timer to create the illusion of someone being home. For the sake of your energy dollars, any lights or equipment not on a timer should be turned off while you’re gone.
Hold the mail, forward your calls, pack your sunscreen, and save on energy while you’re away on vacation by adding these simple tricks to your pre-departure to-do list.
