The holidays are finally upon us again, and that means it’s time to prepare your home for the coming winter. In fact, holiday HVAC concerns should take top priority before the temperature drops too much. To help you out, we’ve compiled a few simple tasks that you should carry out:
Call an HVAC Technician
The best way to ensure that your heating needs are met over the holiday is to have the system serviced by a qualified HVAC technician. Not only will this help keep the system running smoothly throughout the season, but it will improve its efficiency and prolong its operational lifespan.
Decide Between an Indoor and Outdoor Party
Holiday parties are great, but one where your guests are constantly going in and out of your home will make proper heating more difficult. It’s best to decide between an indoor and outdoor party, and then try to keep your guests in that central location. No need for a port-a-potty, though, if you choose an outdoor party. Don’t take it that far!
Replace the Furnace Filter
When your furnace filter gets dirty, the system is less effective in terms of heating and keeping contaminants from entering your air. As a general rule, the filter must be replaced or cleaned, depending on the type that’s used, every 1-3 months. Checking it prior to the holidays kicking into gear is a great plan.
Fill Air Leaks Around the Home
It’s impossible to completely avoid air leaks in your home, but the more you can seal up, the more efficient your heating system will be. The most likely culprits of air leaks are the areas around your doors and windows, but your home’s ductwork is a common area, too. Seal these leaks as you find them and your heating ability will be vastly improved throughout the season.
