Are You Accidentally Voiding Your HVAC Warranty With Any of These Decisions?

October 23, 2014 | Blog

The major investment you have made in your HVAC equipment is protected by a warrantyโ€”or is it? Mistakes you make can unintentionally void any warranty protection you may have on the system inside your Coastal Bend home. Avoid future issues by educating yourself on how to preserve your warranty.ย

Register

Some HVAC equipment manufacturers will accept proof of purchase as acceptance of their warranty, while others expect you to register your equipment, including information such as installation date and the name of the professional company that installed it. To prevent voiding an HVAC warranty, register the equipment soon after installation.

Original Equipment

Some parts on an HVAC system need routine replacement, such as blower motor drive belts and furnace filters. Some parts that break down may need replacement. Be sure to insist on parts made for your particular brand of HVAC equipment, by the original manufacturer. Off-brand replacements may be cheaper in the short-term, but could end up voiding an HVAC warranty, making a small problem needlessly expensive.

Part A into Slot B

If your HVAC system is installed incorrectly, your less-than-professional installer may be responsible for voiding an HVACย warranty. Use a reputable HVAC contractor for installation, and double-check that the company has experience with your particular brand and model of equipment.

Deferred Maintenance

If you hoped to save money by skipping annual inspection and service, you could be responsible for voiding an HVACย warranty. Not only will you face higher energy bills from inefficient equipment, you could leave yourself open to a very expensive repair for a neglected system.

What Maintenance?

Proving a regular schedule of service from an HVAC contractor protects you. Having a service agreement can benefit you in multiple ways.ย Save your receipts to prevent voiding a warranty when and if a problem arises. Keep all your maintenance records together. Some homeowners choose to put them in an oversized envelope that is attached by thin wire to the HVAC equipment itself.
