Leaky Ductwork? Five Reasons To Seal The Whole Deal

June 5, 2012 | Blog

You may be surprised to learn that according to the federal Energy Star program, 20 percent of an average home’s cooling and heating is lost to leaky ductwork. Sealing ductwork can result in significant benefits for your home and family as we look toward summer in South Texas. They include:

  • Your home will be more comfortable. Cooling and heating will be more even in your home, eliminating the problem of rooms that never get cool enough in the summer or warm enough in the winter.
  • Sealing ducts will improve your home’s air quality, keeping irritants and allergens out of the living space of your home. These airborne particulates can cause health problems and aggravate pre-existing problems such as allergies and asthma.
  • Leaky ductwork can cause backdrafting, in which combustion gases such as carbon monoxide that are released by gas appliances go into your living space instead of being vented properly to the outdoors.
  • Sealing and insulating ducts leads to greater efficiency and lower energy bills. The energy savings can often make the duct sealing pay for itself.
  • More efficient ductwork means less energy used in the home, which is better for the environment.

Check the ducts in your home for faulty connections and other types of leaks. Any leaks should be sealed with mastic sealant or metal tape. Duct tape is not durable enough and should not be used.

Ductwork should also be insulated where it passes through areas of your home that do not receive cooled and heated air, such as attics, garages and crawl spaces. Insulation will ensure that the conditioned air reaches the living areas.

Consult an HVAC professional with any questions about ductwork and duct sealing. Professional sealing is advised for leaky ductwork. You may also wish to consider regular HVAC maintenance to ensure that your home stays comfortable, safe and energy efficient.
