Not running your air conditioner during the summer isn’t really an option if you live in a hot climate – you’ve got to do it if you want to be comfortable. However, you don’t have to run your A/C around the clock all summer long to beat the heat. Use these tips to help you minimize A/C use and reduce energy usage while remaining cool.
- Install a programmable thermostat so you can control the temperature of your home at different times. For example, your home doesn’t need to be 72-degrees while you’re at work. Turn it up 2 or 3 degrees and set it to come back down about an hour before you get home. You won’t notice the temperature change but you’ll save money each month.
- Make sure you seal air leaks around your home. Having somebody inspect your home for leaks can keep cool air from getting out and will allow you to run your A/C for a shorter period of time to cool your house. You should also have your air ducts checked and sealed. Leaking air ducts can keep a significant amount of cool air from actually entering your home.
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones. It might seem like a tiny difference, but incandescent light bulbs can generate a lot of heat around your home.
- Turn appliances off when they’re not in use. Even things like televisions and cable boxes generate heat in your house. Turn them off when you don’t need them and you’ll save a little bit of money.
