Seal The Leaks In Your Ducts, And Plug A Drain On Your Pocketbook

September 6, 2011 | Blog

Your HVAC system’s ductwork plays a huge role in how comfortable you feel in your home each day.  If it’s poorly sealed, you won’t be able to get optimal performance from your HVAC system, no matter how efficient it may be.  Sealing your ducts will ensure that you’re able to get the most out of your HVAC system while keeping your energy expenses down.

In a typical forced-air system, your ductwork distributes conditioned air throughout your home.  If the connections between the individual ducts are not airtight, air escapes before reaching the supply duct and is wasted in unoccupied areas such as your attic.  Up to 30 percent of your air can be lost this way, preventing your home from reaching its ideal temperature.  This leads you to crank up your HVAC system, driving up energy costs while also adding to the wear and tear your system endures.  Duct leaks can also amplify dust problems in your home.

At Mathews CCAC we can seal your ducts in order to boost the overall efficiency of your cooling and heating system.  We know the most common areas to find leaks and the best ways to fix them.  One of the most common solutions is to use duct mastic, a putty-like sealant that spreads over holes and gaps and then hardens, preventing air from escaping.

Air leaks are not the only thing that can reduce the efficiency of your ductwork: heat transfer can change the temperature of the air in your ducts as it gets distributed throughout your home.  In the extreme months of summer, built-up heat in your attic can cause air passing through ducts in your attic to be warmed before it reaches the supply vents.  If your ductwork is very old it may have very thin insulation on it causing you to lose efficiency and money.

Each improvement you make will make your HVAC system more energy-efficient.  This leads to higher comfort and lower energy bills.  You will also eliminate common problems such as warm or cold patches you may be experiencing in your home.
