Sporting Equipment and IAQ Concerns

March 12, 2019 | Blog

Sporting Equipment and IAQ ConcernsA home gym makes a convenient place to improve your health with regular workouts. Two factors that determine whether you reap the full health benefits are choosing the right sporting equipment and making time for exercising. Another critical concern should be the air quality in your workout space, because poor air quality can cause a host of health problems.

Understanding IAQ Concerns With Home Gyms

There are two reasons why IAQ can be problematic in home exercise rooms. One is that workout spaces are often found in out-of-the-way areas where good air circulation is lacking, like a basement, garage or seldom-used room. Secondly, the body needs extra oxygen during a workout, so breathing is deeper and more frequent. These two issues combined can elevate your exposure to airborne allergens, contaminants and pollutants such as:

  • Mold and mildew that thrive in warm, humid environments.
  • Invisible dust mite populations that gorge on shed skin cells.
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from rubber exercise mats and equipment components, carpeting, and common household items like solvents, paints and cleaning supplies.
  • Gasoline fumes from nearby equipment and vehicles.
  • Droppings from insects, rodents and other invasive pests.

Ways to Improve IAQ in Your Home Gym

If you’re concerned about poor air quality in your home workout space, here are some strategies that you can use to improve it:

  • Thoroughly clean and vacuum the gym area on a regular basis to minimize your exposure allergens and contaminants.
  • If necessary, invest in a dehumidifier to help keep mold and mildew under control.
  • Open all the nearby windows as often as possible to let out stale air and introduce fresh outdoor air.
  • Investigate having an air cleaner added to the HVAC system to eradicate airborne bacteria, allergens and VOCs.
  • Move your gym setup if necessary so that it’s located within your home’s conditioned space.
  • Keep your HVAC components and ductwork in good working order with regular professional maintenance.
  • Change your HVAC air filter regularly to help preserve airflow balance and ample circulation.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
