How to Maximize Energy Efficiency and Still Enjoy Holiday Lights on Your Home

November 18, 2014 | Blog

Holiday lights and energy efficiency don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Believe it or not, you can share a little holiday cheer with the neighborhood without breaking the bank. Here’s how to decorate your home without putting a strain on your holiday budget.ย

Invest in Timers

There is no reason to keep your holiday lights on around the clock; not only will it annoy the neighbors, it’ll wind up wasting electricity. Instead of keeping your lights on around the clock, set the timer to turn them on during evening hours, when they can be seen and appreciated by your friends, family and your neighbors.

Decorate with LEDs

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) use up to 90 percent less energy than traditional holiday lights. Look for lights with the ENERGY STARยฎ label and you’ll be assured of energy efficiency and holiday lights that last up to 10 times longer, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Utilize Extension Cords

If you have areas around your home that aren’t visible, like behind bushes or the back of a tree, there’s no need to waste precious electricity lighting them. An extension cord will help you add length without excessive energy costs. Be sure not to overload the extension cord, this can cause a fire hazard.

Forgo Lights Entirely

Who says that holiday decorations have to light up? If you really want an energy efficient home, look into other options like bells, ribbons or wreaths. Humans were decorating for the holidays for a long time before electricity was invented. Why not incorporate a more traditional look for your home this year?

A home with a flamboyant light display may look beautiful, but that beauty comes with a hefty price. With a little foresight and creativity, you’ll find that it’s possible to have a season with bothย holiday lights and energy efficiency.
