Which Are the Top Heater Issues to Watch Out for This Fall?

September 17, 2020 | Blog

It’s common to have a few kinks in the heating system at the start of the cooler season. Sometimes it’s a simple fix, but other times, you may need to call in an HVAC professional to solve top heater issues. If you’re having heater issues, read through the following common problems before calling a pro.

The Heater Is Constantly On

Some heaters could just need a thermostat adjustment. Check to see if the thermostat is in the “On” position rather than the “Auto” position. If it is “On,” the fan will run continuously. You want to set the thermostat to “Auto” so that the fan turns off when the thermostat’s temperature setting is reached.

There Are Uneven Temperatures In Your Home

Uneven temperatures can make it very difficult to find the right thermostat setting. However, rather than being grouped with top heater issues, it could be a problem in your ductwork. Duct leaks and disjointed seams will lower air pressure before airflow reaches the supply vents. Ask your HVAC technician to inspect the ductwork.

Cool Air Is Flowing Out of the Vents

Heat pumps are popular HVAC systems in South Texas, but they could become top heater issues if they are not well maintained. If you are experiencing cool airflow in “Heat” mode, check the outdoor condenser to see if ice has accumulated on it. If it has, your technician needs to service the unit or the ice will just return.

The Thermostat Isn’t Working Properly

Make sure that the thermostat is set in “Heat” mode and not “Cool” mode. This is a common oversight. If this is still one of the top heater issues, the wiring may be wrong or you may need to replace the thermostat.

The Fan Isn’t Running

Again, check the thermostat settings. If that’s not the problem, your HVAC system could have overheated and shut down. Check the air filter. A dirty air filter creates a dramatic pressure drop across the blower. This can overheat the motor and shut it down.
