Most people don’t think about an attic until something happens, like a roof leak, that necessitates a visit to the attic. Before you venture up there, you should be aware of the following attic safety issues.
Watch Your Step
A big danger of attic work is the potential for falls. This is why the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offers fall-prevention guidelines for those who are installing attic insulation or performing other tasks. Hazards include projections hidden under insulation and slipping off the joists. Some professionals use safety harnesses in case they slip. This way they avoid falling through the ceiling, which is a possibility.
Prevent falls by being aware of every step and walking only on the joists. Wear thick-soled shoes and watch out for hidden protrusions beneath insulation.
Wear the Right Clothing
Attic temperatures can soar, especially here in the Corpus Christi area. This means anyone going up into the attic needs to protect against overheating. However, this doesn’t mean stripping down to shorts. Insulation, dust and other particles in the attic can stick to sweaty skin and cause misery. Loose-fitting clothes or disposable coveralls that cover you completely are better. Accessories such as knee pads and safety goggles are also recommended.
Wear a Respirator
Protect your lungs from insulation, dust, mold and other particles by wearing a respirator. N95 respirators or surgical masks are better than the cheaper dust masks. Purchase several before the project because you will likely need to switch it out a few times. These respirators are no longer as effective when they are clogged with dirt and sweat.
Watch Your Head
Moving around the attic you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times, and this is not just because of the fall risk. Overhead beams, ductwork or hanging wires can cause injury, so make sure to watch your head. Illuminate the space with plenty of portable work lights so you can see where everything is, including all of the overhead obstacles.
